Artist G. Harvey--A Great Legacy

 G. Harvey 1933-2017

Artist G. Harvey was a true American Treasure. He has blessed so many with his wonderful paintings of Western cowboy and Native American Scenes and his American turn of the century street scenes.

Many of his paintings were used to raise funds for Focus on the Family, a cause that was dear to his heart, through auctions of original paintings and sales of limited edition prints, and those gifts will continue to create positive effects into the future.

Collectors and art admirers have enjoyed his work for many years, and his paintings will continue to bring joy and inspiration to countless people all over the world. G. Harvey artwork can be found in the collections of museums, corporations and private collectors, and select artwork is available through galleries.

His appreciation of the simple times and the accomplishments of those who built America comes through in his work.

Patriotism is a strong theme in paintings such as A Nation Blessed, Dreams of a Nation and An Evening with the President.

The rugged life of the American Cowboy is shown in his paintings like Men of the Great Northwest and Trailing the Canyon Light.

And his abiding faith was portrayed in his iconic Light Unto the World featuring the large Christmas tree outside the White House in Washington DC, among other paintings..

We are so thankful for the life and contributions of G. Harvey and the wonderful legacy he left for us.

J Watson Fine Art carries a selection of rare G.Harvey original paintings as well as many of his sold out at the publisher limited edition prints. You can contact the gallery at 661 476-7558 or e-mail info@jwatsonfineart.com or visit the website at www.jwatsonfineart.com for more information.

Masters of the American West Highlights

Longing for Home by Kyle Polzin
Family Traditions by Morgan Weistling
Capturing the Captain's Coat by Howard Terpning

As supporters of the Autry, we wanted to share some of the highlights of the Masters of the American West show this year.

This was the first year that selected works were offered in an open live bid format, rather than silent bid.  There were paintings in the live bid auction by Howard Terpning,  ZS Liang,, Mian Situ, and Kyle Polzin.

The rest of the available paintings in the show were sold by ballot box draw as usual.

Howard Terpning was close to 2 Million with the sale of his painting Capturing the Chief's Coat 40 x 50 which sold for 1.9 Million to the highest bidder. Limited Edition giclee canvases of the piece were produced by his publisher The Greenwich Workshop, and have already sold out at the publisher. Contact us if you are interested in adding one of Howard Terpning's original paintings or sold-out at publisher limited editions to your art collection.

We are also fortunate to have some of Howard's double signed Artist Proofs direct from the family vault that we can offer our collectors.

Morgan Weistling won the Purchase Award for his wonderful painting Family Traditions, which is now part of the Autry permanent collection.  We are very happy for Morgan's well deserved win, although it would hae been nice to be able to buy the painting for one of our collectors : )

Kyle Polzin exceeded expectations yet again with his painting Longing for Home 17 x 36 which sold for 60.000.

Overall it was a good night for Western art.

You can browse more Western art on our website, and we have more art available that is not on the website. Contact us at 661 476-7558 or e-mail info@jwatsonfineart.com and let us know if there is something on your wish list for art we can assist you with.

G. Harvey Art Reaches New High Price and Great Demand at Auction

Winter's Gold 24 x 36 by G. Harvery
Land of No Fences 24 x 36 by G. Harvey
New York, New York 40 x 30 by G. Harvey
Manhattan Showers 12 x 9 by G. Harvey  available from J Watson Fine Art

G. Harvey is truly an American treasure and collectors have been showing their appreciation of his beautiful original paintings with fierce bidding at auction recently.

Several (but not all) auction lots have closed with sales prices way over auction estimates. Notably at Jackson Hole Art Auction this September, Winter Gold (Western) sold for almost 170,000 with auction estimates of 60,000-90,000, Land of No Fences (Western) sold for over 140,000 with auction estimates of 70,000-90,000, and in April, the wonderful city scene New York, New York sold for over 281,000 despite auction estimates of 120,000-180,000, setting a new record for a G. Harvey painting at auction (so far).

Though rare, there are still some small G. Harvey original paintings at modest prices that can be acquired in the teens and twenties that we can offer to collectors wanting a one of a kind treasure from this talented artist, and some larger paintings as well.

As with any fine art, there are no guarantees about what will happen with prices in the future, so my advice is always to buy art that you love, rather than just for investment only.

Whatever the prices, G. Harvey's original paintings are beautiful and have wonderful impressionistic technique, and they bring joy to collectors and those who view them. They also bring to the world an appreciation for the simple things and good values that are part of the spirit of America.

You can view G. Harvey originals available from J Watson Fine Art  at the G. Harvey exhibit on our website, and for information or photos of additional originals contact us at 661 476-7558 or e-mail info@jwatsonfineart.com.

Morgan Weistling has an exceptional talent. His work is reminiscent of some of the great masters like Renoir, Sorolla and yet he has his own unique signature.

Celebrating Pino Art on his Birthday, November 8th.

In the Garden, Pino Original Painting

Daydream by Pino Daeni
A Place in My Heart

Tomorrow (November 8th) is the birthday of Pino Daeni, one of my favorite artists, so I wanted to take a minute to celebrate his life and art.

I have talked to many collectors who love his paintings. Pino collectors tend to be quite passionate about his art. His beautiful scenes of mothers and children have brought smiles to countless viewers.

His paintings of sensual women remind us of the beauty of women and renew an appreciation of them in our busy lives.

Pino was a prolific painter. He was inspired to paint and said that the women came to him in his sleep to be painted. The joy and beauty Pino created continues through his art.

For Pino's birthday, we will offer a complementary copy of the hard-cover coffee table book of Pino art (retail $100) with any purchase of Pino artwork.

You can browse more Pino art at the Pino Daeni exhibit at the J Watson Fine Art website.Contact the gallery at 661 476-7558 or e-mail info@jwatsonfineart.com for more information about Pino originals or limited edition giclees.

At J Watson Fine Art, we are very good at finding the hard to find, and have the rare Morgan Weislting original painting, Pepper, available for a direct sale without a draw. This beautiful painting would be an excellent addition to any art collection.

Serge Marshennikov Beautiful Realist Figure Paintings

New Painting 31 x 31 by Serge Marshennikov

Russian Artist Serge Marshennikov has a true gift. His paintings of beautiful women have amazing realism, yet he maintains a painterly style.

His paintings have the feel of the old-world masters with a classic elegance and tone, along with contemporary aspects to the models and features.

Not surprisingly, collectors have been avidly acquiring his new paintings, and they have been selling very quickly,

We have been fortunate to be able to help collectors add original paintings by Serge Marshennikov to their art collections.

Serge was born in the USSR in 1971 and graduated from the  Repin Academy of Fine Art in St. Petersberg, Russia.

Highlights and Sales Results--Couer d' Alene Western Art Auction 2012

Shirt Worn by Chief Joseph Sold for 877,500 at Auction
Scout's Report by Howard Terpning Sold for 977,000 at Auction
A Life of Cultivation by Scott Tallman Powers--Winner of the Collector's Choice Award

The 2012 Couer d'Alene auction realized total sales of over 17.4 Million  up from last year's 16.9 Million.

Top sales prices included Howard Terpning's "Scout's Report" which sold for 977,000, Frank Tenney-Johnson's "Cowboys Roping the Bear" which sold for 921,000, and a shirt worn by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe (and documented in the earliest known photo of him and a painting that hangs in the Smithsonian and was used for a U.S. postage stamp), which sold for 877,500.

Although there were many sales (90% of all lots sold),  and overall sales were up over last year, we didn't see the way over estimates sales on Terpning paintings that we did at the last big auction in Scottsdale. Can't complain about the almost 1 Million hammer price on "Scout's Report", though.

There were many wonderful paintings, and some very good buys to be had. One of my collectors walked away with a painting well below what he was prepared to pay for it.

Auctions are a funny thing.--sometimes there are two or more collectors who want the same painting and prices can go wild, other times if collectors intent on buying paintings by a particular artist don't attend, or buy something else during the auction, and use up their art budget, you may find a treasure for less than you would expect.

The Collector's Choice Award for the 2012 event went to Scott Tallman Powers for his new painting "A Life of Cultivation", which sold for 22,230..

Pino Daeni Original Painting Maternal Instincts (Version 2)--Famous Paintings with Multiple Versions

Maternal Instincts Original Painting by Pino Daeni

Artist Pino Daeni originals are prized by collectors, and Maternal Instincts is one of his more iconic paintings.. A version of the Pino original painting Maternal Instincts just became available. It has the mother in a lavender dress and the daughter in a teal dress. Another version of Maternal Instincts by Pino (which was also made into a limited edition art print) has the mother in a deep purple dress and the daughter in a burgundy wine dress, and has a deeper background as well.

Many famous artists throughout history have painted multiple version of paintings, including DaVinci, Monet, Van Gogh, and Munch.

A version of Edvard Munch's The Scream made the news this year when it sold at Sotheby's auction house for just under 120 Million, breaking auction records. There are four versions of The Scream. The other three are in museums in Norway.
Rouen Cathedral by Claude Monet
Between 1892 and 1894, impressionist Claude Monet painted a series of 31 paintings of the Rouen Cathedral with different light and atmospheric occurrences, such as clouds and fog, and from different perspectives. The paintings were well received, and a commercial success at the time. One of the Cathedral paintings was sold at auction in 2000 for over 24 Million. Two of the paintings are in the National Gallery of Art in Washington  DC, there are others in museums throughout the world.

Without Borders by Peter Max
Of course, there are famous examples  in modern or "pop art" as well, with Andy Warhol and Peter Max. Sometimes multiple versions of a painting would be displayed together as one montage, but there are also versions of paintings that stand alone.

With multiple versions of original paintings, each painting is a unique one of a kind painted by the artist's hand, and not a reproduction like a limited edition print or giclee canvas.

For more information on Pino Daeni art or to request a quote on Maternal Instincts,  visit the Pino art exhibit. or contact us at 661 476-7558 or info@jwatsonfineart.com.
